Rangers Defeat Cowgirls 5-1 at Home in First Conference Matchup
Denver, Colo.: Coming off of 1-0 loss to No. 6 Minnesota State-Mankato on Sun., Sept. 6, the Rangers snagged a 5-1 victory over the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls on Friday in their first conference matchup of the season. Jordan Miller scored two goals while Lexi Tagen, Marissa Davis, and Shawnee Wood each scored one.
Regis (4-1, 1-0 RMAC) scored the first goal of the match at the 14:36 mark when Miller tapped the ball past NMHU goalkeeper Lauren Waite. Tagen passed the ball to Miller which forced Waite out of the goal and left it open for the the kick. Miller scored again just less than five minutes later when Tagen assisted her once again. Tagen took a corner kick for the Rangers and crossed the ball into Miller who headed it into the upper right corner of the net.
NMHU (0-4, 0-1 RMAC) scored their first and only goal of the game just over ten minutes later (29:30) when Jessica Heninger was assisted by Stephanie Devisser and Estelle Rocco. The Rangers decided to get one more goal up on the Cowgirls before the closing of the first half when Tagen scored her fourth goal of the season. Tagen set up for a penalty kick and placed the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
The second period began and went scoreless until the 60:01 mark when Regis' Marissa Davis scored her second goal of the season. Davis passed to Miller who passed it back to her for the goal. Just over four minutes later Shawnee Wood scored her first goal this season giving the Rangers five goals. Miller crossed the ball in to Davis who headed the ball for Wood to kick in.
Regis totaled 16 shots in the game while holding the Cowgirls to just six. Eight of those shots were on goal while NMHU had three.
The Rangers will face Nebraska-Kearney in their next matchup in Kearney. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. (CT) on Sun., Sept. 13.
