Rangers Redeem Early Season Loss with 3-1 Victory over 11th-Ranked Winona State
Winona, Minn.: The first game of the season the Rangers lost to Winona State 2-1 in overtime. This time around things would be different, the Rangers fell behind early but scored three in a row to beat the 11th-ranked Winona State Warriors 3-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Regis (17-6) will now move on to the round of 16 and will face a familiar foe in Metro State, who has twice beaten the Rangers this season including a 1-0 win in the RMAC Championship Match last Sunday. They will play each other on Friday, Nov. 21st in Allendale, Mich. at host and #1 nationally ranked Grand Valley State.
Winona State (19-3-1) scored just 3:02 into the game by all-region player Amelia Kasten. Regis responded with junior forward Heather Thomas who battled back from a bout with the flu to score her sixth goal of the season off an assist from senior forward Carter Cornett at the 29:55 mark. Just under six minutes later Cornett notched her 26th goal of the season, assisted by junior midfielder Lexi Tagen and Heather Thomas.
The Rangers put the nail in the coffin just over 10 minutes after halftime as Tagen scored her eighth goal of the season off the second assist of the day by Thomas. Freshman goalkeeper Rosie Campbell notched her ninth victory of the season allowing just the one goal and collected three saves.
