Rangers Battle #11 Pfeiffer but Fall 10-9
Misenheimer, N.C.: The Rangers began their spring break trip with a matchup with 11th-ranked Pfeiffer. The Rangers battled the Falcons till the end but ended up falling 10-9.
Pfeiffer (3-1) got on the board first two and a half minutes into the game. Erin Todd had the equalizer for Regis (0-2) two minutes later. Pfeffier then scored three in a row over a six minute period to take a 4-1 lead with 16:08 left in the first half.
Danica Cutshall scored a minute later to creep to within 4-2. Pfeiffer stretched their lead to 5-2 with just under three minutes left in the first stanza. The Rangers had some huge momentum heading into the second half when Maribel Gallegos scored off an assist from Maddie Garcia and trailed just 5-3.
The two teams traded goals in the first three and a half minutes of the second half before the Rangers were able to take control of the game. RU scored three goals within a three minute span to take their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 23:14 left.
Ashleigh Kassab tied the score just 30 second later before Maddie Garcia put RU back ahead 8-7 with a free position goal at the 19:07 mark. Regis went eight minutes without scoring in which the Falcons scored two to take the lead at 9-8 with 12:22 to go.
Todd again had the equalizer when she scored a goal with 11:45 remaining to knot the score at nine. The two defenses then really buckled down over the final 10 minutes of the game. Pfeiffer didn't allow the Rangers to score the rest of the way and the game winning goal for the Falcons came with 4:26 left in the game. The Rangers only got two shot attempts at the net over the final 10 minutes of the game.
Pfeiffer outshot the Rangers by one, 21-20, while Regis won the draw control battle at 12-9.
Todd led the Rangers with three goals on three shots, while also grabbing two ground balls. Emily Behr and Garcia each had one goal and an assist for RU. Behr had four ground balls to pace the Rangers while Garcia had two. Gianna Lombardi had a good game in goal and registered six saves.
Regis heads to Charlotte, N.C. to take on Queens University on Monday.
