Rangers Fall 92-80 to Western New Mexico in Overtime
Denver, Colo.: After winning four straight, the Rangers' streak came to a halt with Western New Mexico as Regis fell to the Mustangs 92-80 in overtime at home on Thursday. In the game, Salina Kuiper scored 24 points and Tae'lor Purdy recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Regis (8-5, 1-4 RMAC) took the first lead of the game just one minute into play when Kuiper scored her first bucket of the game to put the Rangers up by two. The Rangers extended their lead to seven before the Mustangs tied the game at 11 at the 14:15 mark and took the lead just over a minute later. The lead was exchanged before Regis walked away at the break with a two point lead (33-31).
During the second half, both teams led up until the 13:46 mark when Western N.M. (2-8, 2-2 RMAC) gained the lead (44-47) and allowed Regis to tie just three times until Regis went up by two (74-72) with just 1:32 remaining in the game. A layup by Mustang Shatwa Morris at 1:27 tied the game and sent it into overtime.
A short 16 seconds into the overtime period the Mustangs grabbed the lead and extended it to 12 to end the game in Western New Mexico's favor 92-80.
Along with Kuiper and Purdy were Emily Kuipers and Chelsea Porter scoring in double digits. Kuipers totaled for 16 points while Porter had 13. Kuiper and Kuipers both pulled down nine rebounds for the Rangers while Porter grabbed seven. Regis assisted on 19 baskets and forced 22 Mustang turnovers in the game.
Up next, Regis will face CSU-Pueblo on Jan. 15th in a conference matchup. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. in Pueblo.
