Rangers Nip California State University-San Bernardino for First Victory of the Season

Phoenix, Ariz.: The Regis Ranger women's basketball team earned their first victory of the season by nipping California State University-San Bernardino at the Grand Canyon University Tournament 72-71.  A few nights after only shooting 5-27 from behind the arc against Minnesota State Moorhead, the Rangers hit on 11 three-pointers in just 20 attempts.

Sophomore forward Chelsea Porter came off the bench to lead post a career-high 24 points on 6-of-12 shooting including dialing in five from long distance.  Neither team could stop each other in the first half as CSU-San Bernardino (1-1) took a 50-44 lead into the halftime break.  They shot at a 56.3 percent clip while Regis hit on 46 percent of its attempts.

The second half was a different story where Regis (1-1) shut down the Coyotes forcing them into eight turnovers and a chilly 24 percent from the field.  Coupled with that was the fact that the Rangers had 12 more free throw attempts and made 17 total to just eight for the Coyotes.

Senior guard Courtney Ault was next for Regis hitting for 17 points on 5-of-8 from three-point territory.  Senior post Paulina Tuell chipped in with 10 points while fellow senior, guard Jenny Vieira, flirted with a triple-double as she scored eight points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a game-high seven assists.

Regis will play again tomorrow against Cal. State-Los Angeles tomorrow in Phoenix at 2 PM.
