LAKEWOOD, Colo.: Regis University softball dropped two mid-week games to Colorado Christian University on Wednesday afternoon.
The women went up early in the first game, commanding a five run lead by the fifth inning. CCU put up six in the fifth and sixth innings to close the Rangers out 6-7 in the seventh inning.
Sophomore Breanna Backlund had a day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs on three singles. Senior Cassie Long went 2-for-2 with one RBI and two walks during the first game, while freshman leadoff Rachel Illias put in a 3-for-4 performance as well.
Senior Nikki Haberkorn started the game for the Rangers, slinging five innings and allowing five runs and one walk on seven hits in her 23 batters faced. Freshman Sydney Gaffin (5-7) earned the loss for the game after pitching one inning, allowing two runs on two hits in six batters faced.
The second game went to five innings before the Cougars took the win 3-11 over the Rangers.
Regis scored first in the second inning, putting up one run after Long doubled and advanced to third on an error by right field. Haberkorn sent a sac fly to right field to pick up the run. The Cougars answered with two runs of their own.
In the third inning, Ranger freshman Breanna Bogdajeiwcz reached on an error by the second baseman. Illias doubled down the left field line to move her over and junior Shannon Massine grounded out to the pitcher to send her home. Backlund singled to left field to score Illias and collect the second run of the inning.
The Cougars put up two in the third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth to earn the win over the Rangers.
Backlund went 2-for-3 at the plate, with one RBI. Illias put in a 2-for-3 performance. Three other Rangers had hits during the game.
Gaffin picked up the loss after pitching four innings and allowing six runs and one walk in 10 hits. She faced 22 batters before freshman Molly Tyler finished up the game. She allowed five runs and two walks on four hits in her eight batters faced.
The Rangers will take on UC-Colorado Springs Saturday and Sunday, April 14th and 15th at home in Denver, Colo. Saturday will be Senior Day for the women, honoring seniors Natalie Adami, Maegan Cooley, Nikki Haberkorn and Cassie Long.
