CANYON, Texas: The Ranger women's softball program recorded their first win of the 2011-12 season on Sunday with a 9-6 win over the Zias of Eastern New Mexico University.
The women scored three runs in the first inning to start the game. Junior Shannon Massine started the inning with a triple to center. She was followed by a pair of back-to-back homeruns by sophomore Breanna Backlund and freshman Taylor Wilcox.
The Rangers scored one in the fourth and three in the seventh to close out the game. Wilcox led the Rangers with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. She earned three RBIs, while hitting a homerun and two singles on the day.
Backlund picked up a homerun and a single in her two RBI performance. She went 2-for-4 at the plate. Long also went 2-for-4 with one RBI. She hit a single and a double against the Zias.
Freshman Sydney Gaffin (1-2) will get her first win of the season. She kept the Zias to six hits and four runs during her time on the mound, while striking out one and allowing two walks in her 25 batters faced.
Freshman Molly Tyler went in to relieve her in the bottom of the fifth inning, seeing 1.1 inning and nine batters during her time on the mound. She allowed two hits, two runs and three walks during her time.
The women will start their first RMAC Conference series against Nebraska-Kearney at home on Friday and Saturday, February 25th and 26th next week. Fridays games will start at 12:00 and 2:00 PM.
