Tarleton Gets the Best of Regis Softball

Canyon, Texas:  The Ranger softball program travelled to Canyon, Texas to compete in the West Texas Lady Buff Classic tournament hosted by West Texas A & M.  The women lost their first two against Tarleton State University Friday 13-4 and 7-2. 

Tarleton was on the Rangers from the start of the first game, recording three runs in the first inning and two in the second.  Regis held them off in the third, but they went for five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth before the game was ended. 

The Rangers picked up their first run in the second, collected two more in the third, and their final run in the fifth.

In the first game, the Rangers put up eight hits in 22 at bats and five innings.  Sophomore Breanna Backlund led the women with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.  She tallied two doubles and single throughout the game, while posting two putouts and one assist at second base.

Freshman Rachel Illias put up a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with one double and a single.  Seniors Nikki Haberkorn, Cassie Long and Maegan Cooley each collected a hit against Tarleton.

Haberkorn (0-4) will get the loss.  She tallied three strikeouts and only two walks before freshman Syndey Gaffin took over.  Gaffin posted one strikeout and two walks in seven batters faced.

The Rangers were more prepared in the next game against Tarleton, holding them off until the Texanns scored one run in the fourth.  They scored six in the sixth to finish with seven runs on the board.

Regis put up a last effort in the seventh by scoring two runs, but could not muster more than that.  Backlund put up a 2-for-3 performance.  Illias, Long and freshman Molly Tyler also posted one run for the Rangers.

Tyler (0-1) will get the loss for the second game as she pitched seven innings and faced 32 batters.  She tallied four strikeouts while allowing five runs and three walks.  Senior Natalie Adami also saw time on the mound, facing two batters and allowing two runs.
