Rangers Split Double Header with Mesa State

Denver, Colo.: After being on the road for two series against CSU-Pueblo and Fort Lewis, the Rangers split on day one against Mesa State on Sunday. Regis took the first game 7-5 before succumbing to the Mavericks in game two 9-5.

The Rangers grabbed their first victory in 11 games as they defeated Mesa State in game one 7-5. The game went scoreless for two innings before the Mavericks grabbed the first lead of the game in the top of the third. They added four to the board in the fourth before Regis posted six runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Alisa Heronema led off the inning with a single up the middle before the Rangers tallied four more hits to compile six runs as they took advantage of one Maverick error. Three of Regis’ hits were through the left side with one to left field and Heronema’s up the middle. Regis posted one more run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead going into the seventh. With Mesa unable to score in the top of the inning, the Rangers grabbed the win.

Bianca Holley recorded the win for Regis and is now 3-11 this season. Recording the loss for Mesa State was Sara Jordan who falls to 2-5.

The Mavericks took the first lead in game two as they jumped up 1-0 in the top of the first. The lead didn’t last for long as Regis tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Shannon Massine scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Nikki Haberkorn.

Mesa State tallied four runs in the second to take a 5-1 lead. Regis added one more to the board in the bottom of the third when Mo McDaniel singled left center and was later brought in on a Maverick fielding error.

The Mavericks added two in the fourth before Regis posted three in the bottom of the inning. Bre Backlund led off the inning with a double to left field. She was brought in on a double down the left field line by Haberkorn before a Mesa State error scored Winsor, who reached on a walk, and Haberkorn.

A homerun by Sara Jordan in the top of the fifth scored two for Mesa State to put the Mavericks up by four (9-5) going into the bottom of the inning. The remainder of the game went scoreless ending the game in a 9-5 victory in favor of Mesa State.

Natalie Adami recorded the loss for Regis and is now 0-2 this season. Grabbing the win for Mesa State was Cierra Lard who holds a 10-8 record now.

Up next, Regis will finish the series against Mesa State on Monday. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
