Rangers Grab Two Mercy Rule Victories Over Kearney

Denver, Colo.: Regis completed their series against Nebraska-Kearney with a sweep of the Lopers taking all four games this weekend. Saturday, the Rangers grabbed both victories with a mercy rule as they defeated Kearney 10-1 in game one and 14-6 in game two.

Alisa Heronema led off the inning in game one with a single through the right side and stole second and third before being brought in by Jamie Winsor on a single through the left side. Bianca Holley singled to right field to score Winsor and Natalie Adami who reached on a walk.

The Lopers added a run in the top of the second on a homerun by Cassie Keck to come within two of the Rangers, 3-1. This run was the only one that Kearney scored for the remainder of the game.

Regis posted three more runs in the second on three hits as they took advantage of one Loper error. Heronema reached on an error by Kearny’s second baseman, Ali Seberger, before advancing to second on a single to the shortstop by Shannon Massine. A triple to right field by Winsor scored Heronema and Massine before Adami scored Winsor on a single through the right side.

The third went scoreless before Regis scored four in the bottom of the fourth to take a 10-1 lead. Winsor walked before Nikki Haberkorn advanced her to third on a double to right center. Adami singled up the middle for two RBI’s. Bre Backlund later brought in the other two RBI’s when she singled to left center to score Bianca Holley, who reached on a walk, and Mo McDaniel, who reached on a fielder’s choice.

With the Lopers unable to score in the top of the fifth, the game ended 10-1 with Regis grabbing a mercy rule. Holley recorded the win and is now 6-10 this season.

In game two, Kearney took an early lead as they scored two runs in the top of the first. Regis answered back with two of their own runs in the bottom of the inning. Haberkorn singled to the left side to score Heronema and Massine for two RBI’s.

The Rangers posted seven more runs in the bottom of the second on three hits and two homeruns, to take a 9-2 lead over the Lopers.

A solo shot homerun by Keck, her second of the day, put one run on the board for Kearney in the top of the third before the Lopers posted one more run in the inning to set the score at 9-4.

The top of the fourth brought two more runs for Kearney, 9-6, as a homerun by Jessie Thomas tallied both RBI’s for the Lopers.

Regis added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Emily Anderson plated Backlund and Heronema on a left field single. Haberkorn then brought in Anderson on a homer to right center.  McDaniel brought in the final run of the game as a single to left center scored Adami for Regis’ second mercy rule win of the day. Haberkorn recorded the win and is now 4-8 this season.

Up next, Regis will face Chadron State on April 10th and 11th in Chadron.
