Rangers Open 2010 Season with Split to Fort Hays State
Denver, Colo.: Back-to-back homeruns by
freshman Alyssa Beskid and sophomore Nikki Haberkorn in the bottom
of the sixth led the Rangers to a 9-1 mercy-rule victory over the
Fort Hays State Tigers on Friday to open the 2010 season. Beskid
went 3-for-4 in the game with three RBI’s and two runs
scored. Haberkorn went 1-for-4 with two RBI’s and crossed the
plate twice. In game two, the Rangers fell to the Tigers 12-2.
In the first game, Regis took an early lead in the first inning
when a single to right field scored freshman Shannon Massine. The
second inning went scoreless before the Rangers tacked on two more
runs in the bottom of the third when Beskid doubled to left field
to bring in Massine and sophomore Alisa Heronema.
A second scoreless inning brought the game into the fifth when the
Tigers scored their first run to set the score at 7-1. Beskid and
Haberkorn’s two homers followed to end the game in the bottom
of the sixth. Junior Bianca Holley grabbed the win as she gave up
one earned run and just four hits while striking out eight and
walking two.
Game two began with the Tigers taking an early 3-0 lead in the top
of the first. A leadoff walk brought freshman Madison Holub to the
plate who doubled to right center to bring in junior Sara Tani.
Senior Adrian Mohr then homered to left field for two
RBI’s.
Regis cut the three run deficit in the bottom of the inning to two
when sophomore Natalie Admi doubled to left center to bring in
Massine who reached on a walk.
Fort Hays State scored seven in the second and two in the fourth
before the Rangers added one more to the board in the bottom of the
fifth. The Tigers walked away with a 12-2 victory. Haberkorn
recorded the loss.
On the day, Beskid went 4-for-5 with three doubles, one homerun,
and three RBI’s. Adami and senior Mo McDaniel each went
3-for-5 with Adami hitting one double and bringing in two runs
while McDaniel had two doubles and one RBI.
Up next, Regis will face Emporia State on Saturday at the Regis
Softball Field. The first pitch is set for noon.
