Taking One of Three Against UCCS, Regis Says Goodbye to Senior Jacki Martinez in Last Home Series
Denver, Colo.: After a two day storm postponed the Rangers host to University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, a triple header took place on senior day at the Regis Softball Field on Monday. The Rangers took game one 7-3 before succumbing to the Mountain Lions in games two (6-5) and three (11-6).
In game one, UCCS took the first lead in the top of the first scoring one run on one Mountain Lion hit. The bottom of the first and top of the second went scoreless before Regis tied the score in the bottom of the second. With two outs, freshman Nikki Haberkorn doubled to left center before sophomore Emily Anderson singled to centerfield to score her. In an attempt to reach second, Anderson was thrown out to end the inning.
The Rangers scored one run in the bottom of the third and one in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead before extending that lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Regis was able to score four runs on three hits while taking advantage of two Mountain Lion errors in the fifth. UCCS came back with two runs in the top of the seventh but was unable to catch the Rangers ending game one 7-3 in favor of Regis. Grasping the win for Regis was sophomore Bianca Holley who is now 13-7.
In game two UCCS took the first lead again, this time it was 3-0. Regis came back with two runs in the bottom of the second to set the score at 3-2. With one out, sophomore Jamie Winsor singled up the middle before being brought in on a double to right field by Haberkorn. A single to right field by junior Maureen McDaniel advanced Haberkorn to third before a wild pitch brought her in for the second run of the inning.
The Mountain Lions scored two in the top of the fifth to extend
their lead to 5-2 over the Rangers. Regis came back in the bottom
of the inning scoring one run to come within two of UCCS. With two
outs, freshman Natalie Adami singled up the middle before advancing
to second on a wild pitch. Senior Jacki Martinez singled up the
middle to score Adami.
The sixth went scoreless before UCCS scored one in the top of the
seventh to go ahead 6-3. The Rangers scored two in the bottom of
the inning but were unable to catch the Mountain Lions falling 6-5.
Recording the loss for Regis was Haberkorn who falls to 13-10.
After splitting in two games, the Rangers took the field along with lone senior Jacki Martinez to say farewell and announce the accomplishments she has made in her career at Regis. She was greeted first by her coaches, then her parents and sister, before receiving hugs from all of her fellow teammates.
The hugs ended and the third and final game began looking a lot like game one. UCCS took an early 3-0 lead with one run crossing the plate in the top of the first followed by two in the top of the second.
The Rangers answered back with one run in the bottom of the
second after Haberkorn led the inning with a double to left center.
Holley tripled to right field to bring her in.
UCCS tacked one more run onto the board in the top of the third
followed by two more in the top of the fifth. Regis added three of
their own in the bottom of the fifth before a scoreless inning took
the game into the seventh with UCCS ahead 6-4. After holding the
Mountain Lions to zero runs in the top of the seventh, Regis scored
two in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.
Adami started the inning with a single through the right side before Martinez singled to third base on a bunt. After a throwing error by the third basemen sent the ball sailing into right field, Adami left for third and Martinez for second. A wild pitch scored Adami and advanced Martinez to third before she got tagged out in a rundown. Winsor lined out to UCCS second baseman Ashley Jordan before Haberkorn approached the plate with two outs and the Rangers down (5-6). Seeming untroubled by the situation, Haberkorn sent the ball over the right center fence to tie the game. After an out, the game was sent into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth UCCS scored five runs on five hits and one Ranger error before holding Regis to zero runs in the bottom of the inning to grasp the win. Recording the loss for Regis was Adami who falls to 2-3.
Regis will play in their final regular season series on April 25th and 26th at Colorado School of Mines. First pitch is set for noon on the 25th in Golden.
