Rangers Split in Day One of RMAC Tournament to Stay Alive for Second Day of Play

Denver, Colo.: After falling 6-4 to Colorado State Pueblo in game one of the RMAC Tournament, the Rangers came back to defeat Nebraska-Kearney 12-4 in just six innings keeping themselves alive for play in day two of tournament play.

In game one, Regis took an early lead in the top of the first after sophomore Alisa Heronema singled to leadoff the game and scored on a sacrafice bunt by senior Jacki Martinez. It wasn't long before Pueblo came back to score three runs and grasp the lead in the bottom of the inning. The Thunderwolves tallied three runs on two hits and one Ranger error.

The second went scoreless before Regis added one more run onto the board in the top of the third coming within one of Pueblo (2-3). Neither team crossed a runner over the plate in the fourth.

Pueblo scored the next run of the game in the bottom of the fifth before Regis scored one in the top of the sixth (3-4). That one run deficit didn't last long for the Rangers as Pueblo scored two in the bottom of the inning to take a three run lead over Regis (3-6). The Rangers scored one more run in the top of the seventh but were unable to combine for six runs ending the game after the top of the seventh.

After falling to Pueblo, Regis faced Nebraska-Kearney in an elimination game. With the tournament being double elimination and both Regis and UNK being in the losers bracket, only the winner would advance after the game.

As in game one, the Rangers came out on top in game two tallying three runs in the top of the first. Heronema began the inning and game with another hit this time a double down the left field line. After two Regis outs, Martinez walked to bring sophomore Jamie Winsor to the plate. A single to centerfield would bring in Heronema and move Martinez to third before freshman Nikki Haberkorn would walk. A single down the right field line by junior Maureen McDaniel brought in Martinez and Winsor while moving Haberkorn to third. Another Ranger out ended the inning.

Regis was able to hold Kearney scoreless in the bottom of the first before going scoreless themselves in the top of the second. Two Loper runs brought UNK within one of Regis in the bottom of the second before Regis doubled their runs in the top of the third.They scored another three runs in the top of the fourth before Kearney crossed two runs over the plate in the bottom of the inning to come within five of the Rangers (4-9).

Pulling away from the Lopers and increasing their lead, Regis scored two runs in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to set the score at 12-4. With Kearney unable to score after the bottom of the fourth, Regis snagged the victory and stays alive for tournament play on Friday.

Regis will face the loser of game eight (#3 Colorado Mines and #7 Fort Lewis) taking place on Friday morning at Regis. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
