Rangers Split Against Highlands to Open Conference Play 1-1
Denver, Colo.: After finishing 4-2 in the RMAC/NSIC Crossover Tournament in Colorado Springs last weekend, the Rangers split Saturday against New Mexico Highlands to start off their conference play 1-1. In the first game, the Cowgirls took the victory 5-3 before the Rangers came back to run rule Highlands 8-0 in five innings in the second game.
In the first game, the first three innings went scoreless before both teams scored three in the fourth. After Highlands scored three Regis came back in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score. With one out sophomore Amber Aragon-Autobee tripled and scored after she advanced on a throwing error by the centerfielder. This brought sophomore Alisa Heronema to the plate to single through the right side and be brought in by sophomore Jamie Winsor who tripled to right center. Freshman Natalie Adami walked and stole second before a single up the middle by sophomore Emily Anderson advanced her to third and scored Winsor.
After six combined runs were scored in the fourth, neither team could score again until the seventh when Highlands got two runners across the plate. Regis couldn't score anyone in the bottom of the seventh ending the game in the Cowgirls favor 5-3.
Although the Rangers fell in game one, they came back to run rule Highlands by scoring eight and holding them scoreless in the second game. Freshman pitcher Nikki Haberkorn grasped the win and a shutout in the game.
Regis scored one in the bottom of the first to grasp the lead early. The second inning went scoreless before the Rangers scored three in the third, one in the fourth, and three in the fifth to close the door in five innings 8-0.
The Rangers will face Highlands for two more conference matchups on Sun., March 1st. The first pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
