Denver, Colo.: The Regis Ranger softball team split a home doubleheader with 22nd ranked Metro State. Metro State took the first game 11-5, while Regis took the nightcap 4-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Regis (12-9, 4-2 RMAC) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth scoring three runs to tie the game at four. The inning was highlighted by a three-run bomb by freshman Nikki Haberkorn, her fourth of the season. Metro State (12-4, 5-1 RMAC) scored two runs in the top of the fifth and five more in the sixth to thwart the Ranger comeback.
Sophomore shorstop led Regis with two of the team's six hits. Haberkorn's three RBI led Regis, while leadoff sophomore Alisa Heronema scored two runs. Sophomore Bianca Holley dropped her third game of the season (5-3) allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits. Freshman Natalie Adami came in to throw a hitless 1 1/3 innings.
The second game was a pitcher's duel as both teams combined for just 10 hits. Regis jumped out early when freshman Cassie Long hit a two-run double in the first inning. Metro State scored one run in the third inning, but Regis was able to respond with one of their own in the bottom half of the third. The Ranges tacked on another run in the fifth inning and on the shoulders of Haberkorn and her nine strikeouts were able to shut down the potent Roadrunner offense.
Haberkorn got her sixth win of the season (6-4) allowing just one earned runs while scattering four hits. She also helped herself at the plate going 2-for-2, while Long led the Rangers with her two RBI.
Regis will play their first true road game as they travel to Silver City, N.M. to take on Western New Mexico on Saturday and Sunday.
