Grand Slam by Emily Anderson Helps Lead Rangers to Split with Fort Lewis College
Denver, Colo.: After dropping game one 2-1 to Fort Lewis College, a first inning grand slam by sophomore Emily Anderson helped lead Rangers to a split on the day with Regis taking the second game 10-9.
In the first game, the score remained tied at zero until the bottom of the fourth when Regis scored one to take the lead. With one out, senior Jackie Martinez doubled to centerfield and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She was brought in on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Emily Anderson.
Fort Lewis (9-9, 6-6 RMAC) answered back in the top of the fifth with two runs of their own to take a one run lead. Unable to score anymore runs, the Rangers fell 2-1 to the Skyhawks in game one.
The Rangers (17-10, 9-3 RMAC) tallied three hits on the game to the Skyhawk's ten. They left just three on base. Sophomore Bianca Holley recorded the loss on the mound.
After falling short with just three hits, the Rangers had 14 in the second game to total for 10 runs. Five of those ten runs came in the bottom of the first inning, four of which crossed the plate on a left field homer by sophomore Emily Anderson. Sophomore Amber Aragon-Autobee brought in the fifth run on a single to right center which scored freshman Maegan Cooley.
Regis held Fort Lewis to zero runs in the top of the second and scored one in the bottom to take a 6-3 lead after the Skyhawks scored three in the top of the first. Both teams scored two each in the third. The Skyhawks scored two more in the fourth followed by one Ranger run in the bottom of the inning. Neither team scored in the fifth, Regis scored one more in the bottom of the sixth, and Fort Lewis scored two in the top of the seventh to come one run shy of the Rangers, 10-9.
Freshman pitcher Nikki Haberkorn recorded the win allowing seven runs on ten hits. She walked just one while striking out six. Freshman Natalie Adami recorded the save allowing two runs on three hits in two innings pitched.
Regis will face Fort Lewis in two more games on Sun. March 15th at the Regis Softball Field. The first pitch is set for 11 a.m.
