Regis Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Compete in Joe I. Vigil Open; Amy Smith Finishes 10th

Alamosa, Colo.: The Regis men's and women's harriers competed in their first meet of the season at the Joe I. Vigil Open hosted by Adams State.  The Regis women were paced by Amy Smith who ran the 5K distance in a time of 19:07 earning 10th place.  Sonja Nelson finished in 23rd with a time of 20:19, while Samantha Comerci finished 27th in 20 minutes and 32 seconds.  Olivia Flores and Karoline Garren finished 29th and 30th respectively with just three seconds in between.  Deanna Richert (34th), Whitney Unterreiner (38th), Natalie Farina (39th), Megan Vestal (40th), and Kelsey Schmidt (45th) also ran for the Rangers today.

The women finished in fourth place with defending national champion Adams State taking home the team title with just 20 points outdistancing Western State (42 points).  The Regis men only had four runners so they did not accumulate a team score.

Matthew Drake was the top finisher for the Rangers finishing in a time of 28:48 across the 5-mile course good for 36th place.  Shawn Van Hoose finished 21 seconds later crossing the finish line in 41st place.  Two other runners competed for the Rangers, Sid White finished 49th and Adrian Martinez finished 56th.

The Regis men's and women's cross country team will next compete in the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. on Sept. 19th.
