Regis Men's Soccer Defense Puts Clamps on UC-Colorado Springs Offense in 1-1 Tie
Colorado Springs, Colo.: The Regis Ranger men's soccer team knew that their defense could keep them in the race for the RMAC title. It has done just that this weekend, after a stunning 2-1 win over 24th-ranked CSU-Pueblo on Friday, the Rangers held UC-Colorado Springs to just one goal in a 1-1 tie. Freshman Lio DelPiccolo scored the lone goal for the Rangers, two days after scoring the winning goal against CSU-Pueblo.
First-year head coach Tony McCall says, "Anytime you can go on the road and get some points it is a positive thing, points away from home will help us at the end of the year."
The Rangers (3-2-1, 1-0-1 RMAC) started the scoring at the 35:23 mark when DelPiccolo hit a header in after senior Ryan Brennan took a corner kick and found DelPiccolo in front of the net.
McCall comments, "We were confident going in and besides a few breakdowns we stayed with the game plan. The goal that Lio [DelPiccolo] scored came off a set play that we executed nicely."
The first half ended with the score at 1-0. UC-Colorado Springs (2-3-1, 0-1-1 RMAC) got the benefit of a penalty kick at the 54:05 mark to tie the game. Neither team was able to get another goal across and after two overtime periods ended in a tie.
"We were on our heels a little bit in the second half," states McCall. "We Had a couple of chances to put the match away late and in the two overtimes but were unable to capitalize. Overall thoug, I am proud of the gusy and happy to get out of there with one point."
Senior Wally Fink was spectacular in goal giving up just the one penalty kick goal while collecting three saves.
Regis will return home for their first home RMAC match of the season as they host crosstown rival Metro State 4:30 p.m.
