Ranger Men's Soccer Stays Unbeaten in RMAC Play with 2-0 Shutout of Mesa State

Denver, Colo.: The Regis men's soccer team stays unbeaten in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 shutout of Mesa State today.  It is the first shutout for the Rangers this season as they improve to 4-2-2 on the season and 2-0-2 in the RMAC action.

Freshman Patrick Freeman scored his first goal of the season on a free kick from 30 yards out that skipped past Mesa State goalkeeper Josh Tinaglia at the 36:48 mark.  The game was a very physical game as evidenced by the 31 combined fouls.

"The physical nature of the game is due to the history between the two teams and the high level of competitiveness," states head coach Tony McCall.

The Rangers went into halftime with the 1-0 lead and even as the Rangers were able to control much of the game, they outshot the Mavericks (1-7-1. 1-3 RMAC) 21-5, they were unbable to score again till sophomore Ben Buhler took a transition pass from senior Donnie Montoya and dribbled down the right side and put it past Tinaglia in the bottom left with just 17 seconds remaining in the game.

McCall also says, "the back four played very well in this game as did [Patrick] Freeman in the middle.  He worked hard, was finding the seams well and his goal off the direct free kick was a great goal."

Sophomore Ben Sabados had an outstanding game in goal posting his first shutout of his career registering two saves.

"Sabados played a great game in goal today," comments McCall.  "When his opportunity knocked, he rose to the top and showed how good of a keeper he is."

"Ryan Brennan has been phenomenal the last two or three games, says McCall.  "his height and size are very beneficial for us as he has been winning everything in the air."

Regis will host Colorado Mines on Friday, October 2nd at 1:00 p.m.

McCall states, "Mines is a top three team in our region and a worthy opponent, we need to limit their opportunities."
