Men's Soccer Finds Scoring Groove in 10-1 Defeat of Colorado Christian; Rangers Unbeaten in Six Straight
Lakewood, Colo.: The Regis men's soccer team is unbeaten in six straight matches after a 10-1 defeat of Colorado Christian in their highest scoring match since 2004 when the Rangers scored 13 goals also against Colorado Christian. Freshman Lio DelPiccolo picked up his first hat trick in a Regis uniform with three goals.
Regis (5-2-3, 3-0-3 RMAC) scored their 10 goals in just over 71 minutes after their first score, by sophomore Kyle Emge, at the 19:12 mark. Emge was assisted by seniors James Copeland and Donnie Montoya. Emge put the Rangers up 2-0 with his second goal just over three minutes later. Emge took a cross from freshman Patrick Freeman and headed it in past the Cougars' goal keeper.
Regis scored three more goals in the first half to lead 5-0 at the break. The Rangers scored two more in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
That is when Colorado Christian (2-9-1, 0-6-0) got on the board at the 68:16 mark on an unassisted goal by Mark Sekelsky.
DelPiccolo scored three goals, Emge scored two, as did freshman dynamo Patrick Bonitatibus. Bonitatibus dished out three assists on the day to lead the team. Copeland, junior Nathan Kafer and freshman Adam Hinkelman each scored one goal for Regis.
Freeman and sophomore Jordan Brandel contibuted two assists each, while Montoya, Copeland, Kafer and freshman Kyle Farrell each registered one assist.
Senior Wally Fink got the win in goal, his fourth of the season (4-2-2) while freshman Scott Brown saw his first action of the season and allowed no goals in just over 21 minutes of action.
Regis now has 12 points in RMAC action and is just one point behind Colorado Mines for second place in the conference. The Rangers will be tested next week as they take on 9th-ranked Fort Lewis on Friday and 25th-ranked Metro State on Sunday.
