Regis Men's Soccer Blanks 24th-Ranked Mesa State 2-0

Denver, Colo.: A day after lightning halted the Regis-Mesa State men's match, play was resumed with some lightning on the field.  Nearly 24 hours after the match began, Regis blanked 24th ranked Mesa State 2-0 in RMAC men's soccer action.

Early on both teams used their superb defenses and some hard hitting as each team had only two shots apiece through the first 23 minutes of play.  Regis (3-6-1, 2-3-1 RMAC) scored their first goal of the game at the 28:11 mark after sophomores Sterling Copeland and Nathan Kafer connected.  Copeland dribbled down the left side, crossed the ball into the middle and found Kafer in front of the goal.  That was Kafer's fourth goal of the season tying him with Copeland.

The rough play got even more rough a few mintues later when after a foul call on Mesa State, Ben Potter was tagged with two yellow cards and subsequently a red card.  The Mavericks received four yellow cards within 30 seconds of each other.  Now, with the Mavericks a man down, the Rangers looked to capitalize but went into halftime with just the one goal.  There were 12 combined fouls in the first half, seven by Mesa State.

Regis tallied their final goal of the match at the 64:35 mark as senior Jordan Finley scored his second of the season helped by Copeland and Matt Gonzales.  Gonzales brought the ball up the left wing and crossed into the middle to Copeland who found Finley wide open just outside the goal box on the left.

The second half saw 12 fouls called again, eight by visiting Mesa State (7-5-0, 3-3-0 RMAC).  The Rangers had 17 shots to just nine for the Mavericks.  Junior goalkeeper Wally Fink picked up his second win of the season and his first shutout with four saves.

The Rangers will travel to Colorado Springs to take on the Mountain Lions on Friday, Oct. 10 at 3:00 PM.
