Big Night from Owens Not Enough as Rangers Lose 83-65
Denver, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) The Regis men dropped their sixth straight game Saturday night at the Regis Fieldhouse, falling 83-65 to Fort Lewis College.
The last few games have been characterized by tightly contested first half play, and tonight was no exception. The Rangers (4-13, 1-12 RMAC) built a five-point lead in the first three minutes, only to watch the Skyhawks (9-8, 7-6 RMAC) take their own five-point lead in the next five minutes.
Regis battled back to tie the score at 26 with seven minutes remaining. Such exchanges continued throughout the half as the score was tied five times and changed nine times. Junior forward Demitrius Owens paced the Rangers offense with 16 first half points, but the Skyhawks brought a slight 44-41 advantage into halftime.
Fort Lewis would take an eight-point lead in the first seven minutes of the second half, but Regis again refused to disappear. An 11-3 run with four points from Owens brought the score to yet another tie. From there the Skyhawks would not yield another lead. A 14-4 run gave the visitors a permanent double-digit advantage with only five minutes to play.
The Fort Lewis offense pushed hard down the stretch to eventually claim the 83-65 victory.
Owens, despite sustaining a cut above his left eyebrow in the second half, was exceptional for the Rangers. He scored 22 points and collected seven total rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Owens was 10-13 (76.9%) from the field and 2-2 from three-point range.
Senior guard Chris Johansen scored 13 points for the Rangers, hitting six of his eight field goal attempts.
Senior center Matt Morris picked up a double-double for the Skyhawks. He collected 10 total rebounds and set a career-high in scoring with 31 points.
The Rangers will hit the road Friday, January 27 to take on Colorado Mesa, who Regis defeated at home earlier this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
