Rangers Battle CSU-Pueblo but Fall 77-64
Pueblo, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) The Regis men fought hard on the road Saturday night against the ThunderWolves of Colorado State University-Pueblo, but eventually fell by a final score of 77-64.
The Rangers (4-11, 1-10 RMAC) came out swinging in the first half, scoring six unanswered points to take immediate control. However, the ThunderWolves (8-7, 5-6 RMAC) were able to tie the game at seven, all within the first five minutes of play.
The score was tied six different times in the half as neither team could figure out the other. The ThunderWolves held a seven-point lead at one point, but the Rangers remained resilient to bring a modest 37-35 deficit into halftime.
CSU-Pueblo looked to take command with a 9-2 run to open the second half, but Regis immediately answered with a 12-5 run of their own. Four points from senior forward Chris Johansen during that span brought the Rangers back to within two.
Momentum again shifted as the ThunderWolves posted a 12-5 run to put the Rangers out of reach for good. The home team eventually built a double-digit lead and went on to win 77-64.
Junior forward Demitrius Owens contributed to his impressive season with his fifth double-double of the year. He scored 11 points and collected 10 total rebounds. Owens' success on the boards brought his team-leading season total to 128 rebounds.
Three other Regis players scored in double-digits Saturday night. Junior guard Dionte Goodlett led the Rangers with 12 points, sophomore forward Jon Conley scored 10, and Johansen connected for 11.
The Rangers return home Friday, January 20 to take on Adams State College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Regis Fieldhouse.
