Rangers Go on Big Second Half Run in Season Opening 71-46 Victory over Maryville
Denver, Colo.: For the fourth time in the last five seasons the Rangers opened a season with a victory this time using a 25-6 run to begin the second half en route to a 71-46 victory over Maryville.
Maryville (2-2) led for most of the first half with Regis (1-0) leading just twice for a total of 1:34. Junior Blake Bales hit a game-tying three pointer with 47 seconds remaining as the shot clock as running out from about 30 feet out.
The Rangers came out of the halftime break and put together the 25-6 run to break the 21-21 halftime run and lead 46-27 with 10:51 remaining in the second half. Regis led by as many as 28 points late in the game coming away with the 71-46 win.
Regis shot a dismal 25 percent (6-of-24) but responded by hitting 18-of-24 in the second half, a 75 percent clip. The Ranger defense forced the Saints into 24 turnovers.
Junior Lance Korell paced the Rangers with 15 points, including three three pointers. Regis, 17-for-20 from the charity stripe, had three others in double figures as well. Senior Curtis Mitchell pumped in 14 points, while juniors Chris Johansen and Brandon MacLellan each chipped in with 12 points.
Regis will return to action on Friday night as they host Saint Martin's at 7:00 p.m.
