Head Coach Lonnie Porter Gets 500th Career Victory with 72-57 Defeat of Western State
Gunnison, Colo.: In a long illustrious career such as Regis head coach Lonnie Porter milestones come and go with the tipoff of the next game. However, tonight coach Porter can cherish yet another milestone for a couple of days, after his team defeated Western State 72-57 for his 500th career victory.
Coach Porter becomes the 10th active coach and the 35th all-time to earn 500 career victories in NCAA Division II history.
Regis (3-3, 1-3 RMAC) jumped out to an 18-5 lead after nine minutes of play and never trailed the entire game. Western State, however, cut the lead to five points (22-17) after going on a 12-4 run over a five-minute span but could not get any closer in the first half.
Western State was able to get within four in the second half after a Tyler Miller three pointer. Regis responded with a 12-2 run of their own to take control of the game and led by double figures the rest of the way and led by as many as 21 points.
Senior guard Matt Rosinski again led the way with 18 points and three assists. Three other Rangers were in double figures highlighted by junior guard Jordan Martinez-Doublin's 17 points. Junior forward Matt Busch and senior forward Alex Potts both came off the bench to chip in with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Regis committed just eight turnovers in the game and hit on 50 percent (28-of-56) from the field.
Western State was led in scoring by Tyler Miller's 12 points and Weylan Towns' 11.
Regis will step out of conference to take on Colorado College on Tuesday, December 15 at the Regis Fieldhouse with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m.
