Rangers Out-Rebound Western New Mexico 55-28 but Fall 83-73 in RMAC Action

Denver, Colo.: The Regis Ranger men's basketball team out-rebound Western New Mexico 55-28 but end up falling to the Mustangs 83-73 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at the Regis Fieldhouse.

Regis (6-6, 1-4 RMAC) led early at 6-5 but unfortunately that was the last time that the Rangers would be in the lead.  Western New Mexico (3-8, 3-1 RMAC) then went on a 22-8 run to open a 27-14 lead with 7:22 remaining.  The Mustangs went into halftime with a 36-26 lead.

Regis had 31 rebounds, 17 offensive, in the first half compared to just 16 for WNMU.  That helped keep Regis in the game as the 17 offensive rebounds equated to 13 second chance points.  The Rangers tallied 28 offensive rebounds in the game and a season-high 55 rebounds.

Both teams came out a blazing in the second half with each team scoring 47 points.  Senior guard Matt Rosinski scored eight of the Rangers 10 points in a two minute span to cut the lead to 55-52 with 8:53 remaining.  Rosinski finished with a game-high 28 points.

That would be as close as Regis would get as the Mustangs steadily built their lead and won going away 83-73. 

Western New Mexico was able to score 25 points off of 24 Regis turnovers, a season-high for Regis.  The game was marred by 50 fouls combined and 75 free throw attempts.  Western New Mexico went 31-for-43 from the charity stripe while Regis was just 18-of-32.

Two players, junior Matt Busch and sophomore Chris Johansen each tallied double-doubles.  Busch notched his first with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Johansen earned his second with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Rosinski, who has averaged nearly 26 points per game in the last six, had a season-high seven rebounds and led the team with three assists.

Tony Riley Jr. led the Mustangs with 21 points, while Jeron McIntosh chipped in with 19.

Regis will have the weekend off before heading crosstown to take on Johnson and Wales in a non-conference tilt.
