Two Late Free Throws Puts Game into Overtime Where Regis Falls 71-68 to Upper Iowa
St. Paul, Minn.: Regis played Upper Iowa tonight for the first time in school history and came out on the short end of a 71-68 overtime score. After sophomore Myron Sanders sank two free throws to tie the score at 66 with 35 seconds remaining in regulation, Upper Iowa outscored Regis 5-2 to drop the Rangers to 4-4.
The two teams battled to seven lead changes and four ties in the first half before Regis went on a 7-0 run in the last 1:40 of the first half to take a 37-33 lead at halftime. Junior Curtis Mitchell scored six of the last nine points for Regis en route to 11 points on the evening.
Regis actually went on a 9-0 run after Jordan Martinez-Doublin scored just 10 seconds into the second half to put Regis ahead by six points. Upper Iowa (5-5) who play in the Northern Sun Intercollege Conference went on a 10-1 run over a 3:24 time period.
Regis trailed 59-51 with just 5:23 remaining but fought back to tie the game with 3:07 left in regulation after an 8-0 run. The Rangers took a brief one-point lead after senior Matt Rosinski hit one of his three pointers with just 2:10 remaining. Following two Peacock free throws with 1:07 left, Sanders stepped to the line with 35 seconds remaining and calmly sank both to tie the game. A missed jumper by Jake Hughes sent the game into overtime, the first for Regis this season.
Neither team shot particularly well in the overtime period as Upper Iowa hit just 1-of-4 and Regis connected on 1-of-7 from the field. However, Upper Iowa was able to connect on three free throws to make the final score 71-68.
Rosinski again led the Rangers with 22 points, while Mitchell chipped in with 11. Three players, sophomore Chris Johansen and seniors Alex Potts and Bill Brandenburg each chipped in with seven points.
The Rangers will play Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. central time in St. Paul, Minn.
