Rangers Snap Five-Game Skid with Resounding 84-63 Victory over Nebraska-Kearney
Denver, Colo.: The Ranger defense forced Nebraska-Kearney into 18 turnovers and limited the top two scorers to 12 points below their combined season average in an 84-63 victory. Regis snapped their five-game skid and revenge an earlier 66-59 loss to the Lopers.
Regis (8-16, 3-13) went on a 15-2 run starting at the 8:28 mark of the first half. Max Froehlich cut the Regis lead to 21-17 at the 8:34 mark before a layup by junior Curtis Mitchell started the game-changing run. Regis led Nebraska-Kearney (11-13, 6-10 RMAC) 36-19 with 3:48 remaining in the first half. The Rangers went into halftime leading 40-25, the most by the Rangers this season.
Regis poured it on the second half, never trailing by more than 12 points and leading by as many as 24 points late in the game. Senior guard Matt Rosinski led Regis with 24 points and had an exclamation dunk at the 13:43 mark dunking over a UNK defender with his left hand. A few minutes later junior Jordan Martinez-Doublin took the wind out of the sails of the Lopers when he threw down a dunk off a great dish by Rosinski.
Regis shot a season-best 61.8 percent from the field hitting on 34-of-55 baskets. The Rangers stifling defense forced the Lopers into 18 turnovers and were able to outrebound the Lopers 27-18. Regis scored 40 points in the paint compared to just 22 for the taller Nebraska-Kearney Lopers.
Four others joined Rosinski in double figures. Sophomore Chris Johansen had a game-high eight rebounds to go along with 16 points. Martinez-Doublin came off the bench to score 13 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting. Mitchell and senior Bill Brandenburg contributed 12 and 11 points respectively.
Regis held the Lopers top two scorers, who were averaging 30 points per game between them to just 18 points. Max Froehlich had 12, while Josaiah Parker chipped in with six. Akeem Morissaint came off the bench to lead the Lopers with 13 points.
Regis will tackle Chadron State tomorrow evening at 5:00 p.m. at the Regis Fieldhouse.
