Rangers Can't Outrun Mountain Lions in 82-79 Overtime Loss

Colorado Springs, Colo.: A step-back three-point basket by Ben Feilmeier with seven seconds remaining in overtime gave UC-Colorado Springs an 82-79 win over Regis in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Friday night.

Regis (6-11, 1-8 RMAC) led most of the first half but only by as many as five points.  UC-Colorado Springs led by four points with 1:29 remaining in the first stanza but Regis scored the next six points including the last three by junior guard Jordan Martinez-Doublin who just beat the buzzer to propel Regis to a 32-30 halftime lead.

The score was tied six times and the lead changed hands three other times in the first half.

Sophomore forward Chris Johansen hit a jumper to put Regis up seven, 44-37, with 15:04 remaining in regulation.  UC-Colorado Springs (6-10, 4-4 RMAC) responded with an 11-2 run to take a two-point lead, 48-46 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

The Mountain Lions took a seven-point lead of their own at 57-50 with 8:13 remaining.  Regis forged the 11th tie of the game two and a half minutes later after a 7-0 run.

After two free throw shots for senior guard Matt Rosinski put Regis ahead 70-67 with 42 seconds remaining.  Feilmeier gave a glimpse of what was to come in overtime when he hit a tying three-point basket with 21 seconds remaining to tie the game at 70.  Rosinski, who had a game-high 29 points, missed a three-point basket as time ran out in regulation.

In overtime Regis took a one-point lead after Rosinski sank two free throws to go ahead one point with 1:06 remaining.  UCCS tied the game 20 seconds later after Chris Hernandez sank one of two free throws.

Regis had the ball and with 40 seconds remaining Rosinski took a jumper from the baseline that was blocked by Tommy Klausner and rebounded by Feilmeier.  UC-Colorado Springs then milked the clock and with seven seconds remaining Feilmeier hit a three pointer that sent the capacity crowd of 1,337 into a frenzy.

Rosinski again had a try at a tying three pointer, but it was off the mark.

The game was tied 17 times and the lead changed hands 16 times.  Each team shot over 50 percent from the field with UCCS outrebounding the Rangers 38-28.

Rosinski scored 20-or-more for the 12th time this season and led the team with six assists in a career-high 43 minutes.  Johansen, who has averaged nearly 14 points in his last six games, had a career-high 21 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  Junior guard Curtis Mitchell chipped in with 10 points, while senior center Bill Brandenburg had eight.

Regis committed just eight turnovers and forced UCCS into 15 on the night.

Feilmeier led the Mountain Lions with 12 points, leading five double-figure scorers.  Fernandez, Cole Smith, Alex Snyder, and Scott Sublousky each had 11 points for the balanced UCCS attack.

Regis will host Colorado Christian on Friday night at 5:00 p.m.
