Cold Shooting Dooms Rangers in 58-49 Loss to CSU-Pueblo
Denver, Colo.: Shooting just 32.7 percent from
the field proved to be too much to overcome as the Regis men fall
to CSU-Pueblo 58-49 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference
action. Sophomore Chris Johansen tallied a career-high 17
points to pace the Rangers.
CSU-Pueblo (9-4, 4-2 RMAC) began the game on a 14-4 run but Regis
(6-8, 1-5 RMAC) held the Thunderwolves scoreless for almost nine
minutes and scored 17 points of their own to lead 17-14 with 5:36
remaining in the first half. The lead changed hands a few
times but heading into half the home team Thunderwolves took a
22-21 lead.
The Rangers were lucky to be only down one as they hit on just 25 percent (6-for-24) but was helped by seven CSU-Pueblo turnovers.
CSU-Pueblo came out on fire as they scored eight points on their first three positions to take a 30-21 lead just 1:30 into the second half. They then extended their lead to 16, the biggest of the game, after going on a 13-2 run over a three and a half minute span.
Regis got back into the game late as they went on a 6-0 run to cut the gap to 54-49 with just 2:10 remaining in the game. Unfortunately the Rangers wouldn't score again and CSU-Pueblo scored four points to win 58-49.
Johansen also had a game-high four steals to go along with six rebounds. Senior guard Matt Rosinski joined Johansen in double figures with 13 points. Junior guard Jordan Martinez-Doublin tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds while chipping in with seven points.
Less than two weeks ago the Rangers were outrebounded by the Thunderwolves 36-20 but battled CSU-Pueblo and nearly matched their 39 rebounds with 36 of their own.
Both teams finished with 12 assists each. Dwayne Wright scored a team-high 16 points for CSU-Pueblo. Chris Busch chipped in with 13, while Marc Williams had nine points. Roman Van Allen had eight steals defensively.
No rest for the weary as Regis returns to action Saturday night taking on New Mexico Highlands at 8 p.m. in Las Vegas, N.M.
