Rangers Run into Hot-Shooting CSU-Pueblo Falling 83-74
Denver, Colo.: CSU-Pueblo shot 72 percent in the second half but had to hit free throws down the stretch to beat Regis 83-74 in a non-conference matchup. Senior guard Matt Rosinski pumped in a season-high 31 points for the Rangers who were outrebounded 36-20 in the game.
Rosinski's 31 points is the second most he has scored in a Ranger uniform trailing only his 37 points he scored exactly one year ago against Peru State.
CSU-Pueblo (8-2) led 16-8 with 13:51 remaining in the first half after a Donell Wells' three-pointer. Regis (6-5) responded with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 18 with 9:39 remaining after a Jordan Martinez-Doublin dunk. Neither team led by more than four points for the remainder of the first half and at the halftime buzzer the game was tied for the ninth time at 32 apiece.
The game was tied for the 11th and final time just over a minute into the second half on a Stevie Ledesma jumper. Over the next five minutes the Thunderwolves impeded their will on the Rangers going on a 19-6 run to lead 55-42 with 13:33 remaining.
CSU-Pueblo led by as many as 15 points on three occasions the final one coming at the 9:56 mark after two free throws by Chris Busch.
The Rangers would not go quietly into the night as they got back in the game by going on a 13-4 run in just under three minutes, trailing 68-62 with 7:01 remaining. Regis was able to cut the lead to just three minutes as reserve guard Blake Bales rebounded a missed shot and put it back in with just 2:26 remaining.
Unfortunately the Rangers were only able to score one point over the final 2:26 while the Thunderwolves put in seven to win going away 83-74.
Junior Matt Busch scored a career-high 16 points for Regis and leading the team with four rebounds. Junior Jordan Martinez-Doublin chipped in with 11 points. Regis was just 11-for-20 from the free throw line.
Rosinski went 12-of-22 from the field and 4-of-6 from downtown. He also led all players with five assists.
Busch's older brother Chris, registered a double-double for CSU-Pueblo with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Five players scored in double figures for the Thunderwolves. Marc Williams also scored 16, while Roman Van Allen had 11 and Imari Thomas and Donell Wells each chipped in with 10 points.
Regis will entertain the Mustangs of Western New Mexico on Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m.
