Regis Men's Basketball Can't Fight Off Grizzly Attack Falling to Adams State 76-64; Head Coach Lonnie Porter Stays at 499 Wins

Denver, Colo.: The anticipation tonight in the Regis Fieldhouse was palpable as the Ranger men were trying to give their longtime head coach Lonnie Porter win number 500.  Unfortunately the Adams State Grizzlies had something to say about it and prevailed tonight 76-64 in both teams opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game.

Regis, now 2-1 overall, took an early lead and led 20-9 with 12:51 remaining in the first half after senior Matt Rosinski's layup.  Adams State (3-3 overall) went on a 15-4 run over the next 4:47 to tie the game at 24.

The seventh and final tie of the first half occured at the 5:02 mark.  The Grizzlies had another run in them outscoring the Rangers, in front of a larger than usual crowd of over 500, 11-1 in just under five minutes to take a 41-31 lead.  Regis was able to cut the lead to six points heading into halftime, 41-35.  Prior to the final four points, Regis went 4:14 without scoring a point.

The Rangers, led in scoring by junior guard Jordan Martinez-Doublin's 21 points, was able to forge two leads.  Two separate times the Rangers led by two points, after a Martinez-Doublin layup at the 16:48 mark and senior Alex Potts' layup with 15:15 remaining.

Potts cut the Grizzly lead to one after a three pointer with 9:35 remaining.  That is when Adams State blew it open by going on a 13-2 run over the next four and a half minutes and was able to keep the lead at or near double figures and come away with the 76-64 win.

Joining Martinez-Doublin in double figures was Potts with 10 and junior forward Matt Busch also with 10 points.  Leading scorer Matt Rosinsi was limited to just nine points on 4-for-15 shooting.  Busch led Regis with six rebounds, while junior guard Stevie Ledesma played 38 minutes en route to a game-high six assists.

Seth Heinbaugh led the Grizzlies with 19 points, while Robby Hanzlik, son of former NBA player and Nugget coach Bill Hanzlik, chipped in with 14 points.

Regis will face Fort Lewis College on Saturday night with tip-off set for 5:00 p.m. at the Regis Fieldhouse.
