Rangers Fall Short 82-78 to Western New Mexico in RMAC Action
Silver City, N.M.: The Regis University men's basketball team came up just short tonight, losing 82-78 to Western New Mexico in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Rangers (5-8, 2-3 RMAC) took an early lead, but the Mustangs (5-8, 1-4 RMAC) took a the halftime lead of 47-35.
Early in the second half, Western New Mexico took their biggest lead of the game at 16 points with 18:55 left in the game. Regis then went on a 14-2 run over the next five and a half minutes. The Mustang lead did not get above six points and at the 5:42 mark after a three pointer by junior guard Matt Rosinski the Rangers tied the game at 66.
Regis cut it to two with 21 seconds remaining in the game and also with nine seconds remaining but couldn't get any closer as the Mustangs four free throws in as many attempts to seal the victory.
The Rangers were hampered by 18 turnovers, but shot well from the field, hitting on 57.1 percent from the field. The Rangers also continued their superb free throw shooting as they connected on 13-of-16 (81.3 percent).
Rosinski led the way with 23 points, his sixth 20-plus point game of the season. Joining Rosinski in double figures, with a career-high 17 points was junior forward Isaiah Johnson.
Regis will host New Mexico Highlands on Friday at 7 PM at the Regis Fieldhouse.
