Las Vegas, N.M.: (By Dylan Docker) Regis baseball continued to produce on Sunday with an 11-4 win over New Mexico Highlands at Brandt Field. The Rangers (21-20, 16-16 RMAC) scored in double digits for the fourth time in their last six games to earn a four-game series split with the Cowboys (29-12, 22-10 RMAC).
Junior right-hander Aaron Harms got the start for Regis, while New Mexico Highlands turned to junior Chris Prokupek.
Senior left fielder Alex Haag put the Rangers on the board with an RBI double in the third inning. The Cowboys would tie the game at one in the fourth, but the Rangers took control in the next inning.
Sophomore first baseman Tony Piazza plated a pair of runs with an RBI single in the top of the fifth. Sophomore designated hitter John Tosches then blew it open with a three-run bomb over the right-center field fence.
Tosches' third home run of the season gave the Rangers a commanding 6-1 advantage after five innings.
Junior center fielder Ryan Eustice continued to fuel the offense with an RBI double in the top of the sixth. Eustice later scored on Haag's second RBI knock of the game.
Sophomore right fielder Steven Brault brought home another pair of runs in the eighth with an RBI groundout. Piazza then scored the Rangers' 11th run on a balk from freshman reliever Nicasio Gonzalez.
The Cowboys picked up three runs in the late innings, but they couldn't catch up to the white-hot Regis offense.
The Rangers picked up the road victory with 11 runs on 13 hits and one error. The Cowboys fell with four runs on eight runs and three defensive miscues. Harms (5-1) continued his run of solid starts for Regis, picking up the win after allowing four earned runs and striking out four over 7 1/3 innings of work. Prokupek (4-5) was charged with the loss with six earned runs allowed over five innings.
Haag finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI's, and two runs scored. Senior third baseman Dave Holland collected three hits in five at-bats, also including a pair of doubles and a run scored.
The Rangers will travel to Colorado Christian College for their final road series of the regular season. The four-game weekend set begins Friday, April 27 with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
