Rangers Travel to Air Force Academy, Fall 8-1
Colorado Springs, Colo.: (By Dylan Docker) Regis baseball took a trip south this afternoon looking to make a statement against Air Force, the first Division I opponent the Rangers have faced this season. Regis (19-18) entered the match-up hoping to take advantage of a struggling opponent, but the Falcons (9-25) took care of business at home with an 8-1 victory.
Both teams sent senior southpaws to the mound on Tuesday. Steve Falconi got the start for the Rangers, while the Falcons turned to Michael Ceci.
Falconi kept the game interesting early on by preventing Air Force from scoring through three innings. However, the Falcons cracked the board in the fourth with four runs, highlighted by an RBI single from sophomore right fielder Jake Schomaker.
Air Force added a run in the fifth on an RBI hit from freshman catcher Brian Sicher, pushing the home lead to 5-0.
The Rangers got to Ceci in the sixth inning when junior second baseman Nick Billinger sent a double down the left field line. He later came around to score on a two-out RBI knock from sophomore first baseman Tony Piazza.
The Falcons answered in the home half with an RBI triple from junior center fielder Alex Bast. The home team added another pair of runs in the eighth to seal the victory at home.
Air Force scored eight runs on nine hits and no defensive errors. Regis fell with one run on seven hits and one error. Ceci (2-6) picked up the win after allowing one earned run and striking out six over six innings of work. Falconi (1-4) pitched five innings, allowed five runs (two earned), and struck out four to take the loss.
Billinger finished 2-for-4, including his double and run scored in the sixth inning. Senior third baseman Dave Holland also picked up a double, his one hit in three plate appearances.
The Rangers resume their RMAC schedule on the road against New Mexico Highlands this weekend. The four-game series begins Friday, April 20 with a 3:00 p.m. match-up between the top two teams in the Plains Division.
