Ranger Baseball Drops to 1-5 with Doubleheader Sweep at the Hands of Nebraska-Omaha

Denver, Colo.: The Regis Ranger baseball team led early in both games with Nebraska-Omaha today but was unable to hold those leads falling in both games by scores of 10-9 and 11-4 to drop to 1-5 on the young season.

Senior catcher Patrick Farrell got Regis started off in the bottom of the first inning by hitting a homerun to center field to drive in fellow senior Jesus Arzaga who got on base via a walk.  That lead held until the top of the fourth inning when Nebraska-Omaha (1-0) plated three runs to take a 3-2 lead.

The Rangers responded in the bottom half of the fourth with two runs.  Regis was aided by two Maverick errors but was able to get RBI singles by both junior Scott Payne and senior Chris Steinbeck.  UNO then scored two runs in the fifth inning and again the Rangers responded, this time by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-5 lead.  With two outs and one on, Payne hit a single through the right side to score senior Max Regalado.  A few batters later, senior Jesus Arzaga, hit a two-run double to center field to plate Payne and sophomore Dave Holland.

Arzaga also had a hit in the second game to extend his hitting streak to 20 games dating back to last season.

Nebraska-Omaha then broke the game open in the sixth inning by scoring five runs in the inning and Regis managed one run each in the sixth and seventh innings to make it interesting late.

Farrell went 4-for-5 at the plate with a homerun and three RBIs.  Steinbeck, Holland and Payne each collected two hits, while Payne and Arzaga had two RBIs apiece.

Sophomore Charlie Henderson went 4 2/3 innings allowing four earned runs in a no decision.  Junior Bryant Asnicar had a tough luck loss as he allowed no earned runs in 2 1/3 innings but the five runs scored against him sent him to his first loss of the season evening his record at 1-1.

Game two started much like game one as Farrell once again came to the plate with one runner aboard in the first inning and connected on yet another home run this time over the left center fence to score sophomore Alex Haag.

The second inning, much like last weekend at Grand Canyon, did the Rangers in.  They allowed eight runs in the second stanza watching UNO get their runs on nine hits.  Regis scored one run once again in the sixth and seventh innings but it was too little too late as the Mavericks tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning to win 11-4.

Arzaga was the only Ranger with more than one hit.  His two hits came in four at bats.  Farrell led the Rangers with two RBIs on his two-run homerun in the first inning.

Senior Gerard Mohrmann got the loss going just 1 2/3 innings allowing seven earned runs.
