Rangers Split Doubleheader with CSU-Pueblo; Mohrmann Pitches Complete Game Gem

Denver, Colo.: The Regis Ranger baseball team escaped from Pueblo, Colo. this weekend taking 2-of-3 from CSU-Pueblo including a split today.

Regis (3-6, 2-1 RMAC) outhit the Thunderwolves 11-7 but was unable to capitalize on their opportunities. CSU-Pueblo scored one run in the third inning and then tacked on three more in each of the fourth and fifth innings to blow open the game and win 7-2.

Junior Zach Blakeley went a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate, while senior Patrick Farrell also had two hits. Senior Jesus Arzaga had a solo homerun and scored two runs. Sophomore Steve Falconi took the loss from the mound going six innings allowing just six hits but five earned runs.

Sophomore Mike McElreath pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit and no runs.

Senior Gerard Mohrmann pitched a complete game allowing just three runs in the first inning and scattered seven hits throughout. Regis had three errors but Mohrmann was able to pitch his way out of a few pressure situations on the way to Regis’ 9-3 victory.

Regis got the game started off well by scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. The Rangers sent 11 batters to the plate which was highlighted by senior Max Regalado’s two-run double. Regis tacked two more on in the fourth and one more in the sixth after getting deep into the Thunderwolves’ bullpen.

CSU-Pueblo put six different pitchers on the mound in the night cap.

Farrell went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while senior J.T. Putt and junior Scott Payne each went 2-for-4 as the Rangers pounded out 11 hits again. Payne and Regalado led the Rangers with two RBIs each.

Mohrmann evens his record at 1-1 on the season.

Regis will now host Colorado Mines next weekend with the first game set for Friday at 3:00 p.m.
