Errors Prove Costly for Regis in 8-5 Loss to 14th-Ranked New Mexico Highlands
Denver, Colo.: With the score tied at two going into the eighth inning, the 14th-ranked New Mexico Highlands Cowboys score one run in the eighth and five more in the ninth to take the first game of a four-game series with Regis 8-5.
Reigning RMAC Pitcher of the Week Charlie Henderson had another good outing going 7 2/3 innings but in the eighth he gave up a two-out double to Jason Carr. After the double, Henderson was replaced by sophomore Tyler Landwehr, and the first batter he saw, Brad Morgan, doubled in Carr to put New Mexico Highlands (26-6, 16-3 RMAC) ahead 3-2.
A two-out error in the top of the ninth proved costly for Regis (13-17, 9-12 RMAC). Following the error, the Cowboys scored five runs, all unearned, to take a commanding 8-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
It got interesting though, as Regis took advantage of two Highlands errors to score three runs to close the gap to 8-5.
Senior Max Regalado led the Ranger offense with three hits, including a triple and a double. Fellow seniors J.T. Putt and Jesus Arzaga each went 2-for-4 with both of Arzaga's hits being doubles.
Henderson drops to 4-3 on the season as he scattered nine hits and struck out seven facing one of the most potent offenses in the country.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12:00 p.m.
