Ranger Baseball Splits Two Games with Grand Canyon Winning 4-3 and Falling 17-6 in the Nightcap
Phoenix, Ariz.: Jesus Arzaga’s game-winning single and errors result in split with Grand Canyon in non-conference baseball action. Regis won the first game 4-3, while Grand Canyon took the nightcap 17-6.
Regis (1-2) tied the game at three in the top of the fifth inning when senior right fielder Max Regalado hit a bomb to left field that cleared the top of the fence for the Rangers first homerun of the season. The score remained tied until the seventh inning when the Rangers mounted one last rally. Regalado got it started with a single to center field, followed by sophomore Dave Holland’s single to right field that moved Regalado to third base.
Grand Canyon (2-1) then replaced starter Colin Courtland and subsequently was able to pickoff Holland at second base. Junior second baseman Scott Payne then walked and then stole second to put runners at second and third. Senior first baseman Chris Steinbeck then struck out for the second out of the inning. It was time for senior Jesus Arzaga to come through in the clutch and in front of many of his family and friends, the hometown kid did come through.
Arzaga was able to take a pitch and put it down the third base line and the third baseman was able to get to it but it was deep behind the base and was unable to get Arzaga at first. Regalado scored from third to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead.
Junior Bryant Asnicar who came in relief of starter Gerard Mohrmann with one out in the fourth inning gave up a double with two outs in the bottom half of the inning but was able to get his first win of the season after going 3 2/3 giving up just two hits and striking out four.
Arzaga and Regalado each finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs each. Regalado also scored two runs to pace the Rangers.

The second game didn’t turn out the same and after the Antelopes scored 12 runs in the second inning to go ahead 14-0 there would not be any heroics from the Rangers.
Regis scored two in the fifth and four in the seventh to make the final score 17-6. Sophomore Steve Falconi was saddled with the loss lasting just one inning allowing seven earned runs.
Arzaga continued his hitting streak, now at 17 games, by going 2-for-4 including four RBIs. His two-run bomb to right field gave the Rangers a glimmer of hope in the seventh inning.
Junior Tim Terry came off the bench to go 1-for-2 with a triple, while freshman Tim Lewis had a single in his only at bat.
