Regis Outscores Colorado Christian 35-10 in Doubleheader Sweep; McDermott Sets Coaching Mark

Golden, Colo.: The Regis Rangers outscored Colorado Christian 35-10 in a doubleheader sweep today in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.  Regis took the first game 18-5 and took the nightcap 17-5.

Regis (13-16, 9-11 RMAC) collected 19 hits in the first game and jumped out early scoring six runs in the top of the first inning.  The Rangers scored four runs over the next five innings and blew the game open by scoring eight in the ninth.

Eight of the Rangers 19 hits were for extra bases led by senior Jesus Arzaga's two doubles and one homerun.  Arzaga went 4-for-6 with five RBIs, while fellow senior J.T. Putt also collected four hits in five at bats.  Sophomore Alex Haag collected four RBIs and went 3-for-5 at the dish.

Sophomore Steve Falconi stymied the Colorado Christian (11-24, 5-14 RMAC) throwing a complete game.  He scattered nine hits allowing five earned runs while striking out six batters.

Regis was aided by Colorado Christian's five errors, while committing just one themselves.

The top of the order did much of the damage for the Rangers in the second game.  The 1-2-3 hitters were a combined 12-for-16 driving in 10 runs and scoring seven runs.  Arzaga and sophomore Dave Holland were each 4-for-5 with Holland leading the way with five RBIs.  Junior Zach Blakeley went 4-for-6 driving in two runs.

Regis scored four runs in the first inning and two in the second and used three pitchers to hold Colorado Christian to just five hits throughout the game.

The Rangers scored three more in the fifth, six in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the 17-5 victory.   CCU committed five more errors to aid the Rangers in taking three of four in the inter-division series.

Haag and Farrell each hit homeruns for Regis.  Haag connected on his seventh of the season, trailing just Farrell's 18 homeruns.  Farrell is now tied for second most in Regis season history trailing just Todd Morben's 24 in 2004.

The Rangers got another eight extra-base hits in the nightcap.

Sophomore Mike McElreath went 3 2/3 innings allowing no earned runs while striking out five.  Sophomore Tyler Landwehr earned his first victory of the season going 2 1/3 innings and junior Bryant Asnicar finished it off with a perfect seventh inning.

With the win, head coach Dan McDermott becomes the Regis all-time winningest baseball coach collecting his 248th victory as skipper of the Rangers.  McDermott is in his 10th season at the helm and has a 248-247 (.501) record.  Coming into the season he was the 20th winningsest active coach with 580 career victories including 345 victories at Briar Cliff College (Iowa).

The Rangers will take on New Mexico Highlands next weekend for a four-game series that begins on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
