Ranger Baseball Splits Two Games with CSU-Pueblo

Denver, Colo.: The Regis Ranger baseball team split two games with CSU-Pueblo in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action winning the first game 15-9 and falling in game two 15-11. Regis trailed 9-2 in the first game before reeling of 13 straight runs to shock the Thunderwolves.

Regis (18-23, 10-17) took an early lead 1-0 lead in the first inning. CSU-Pueblo (32-14, 21-10) scored six in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead after four innings. Regis then went on a tear over the next four innings to win going away.

After the first two batters were retired in the bottom of the fifth, Regis was able to score five runs. After junior Jesus Arzaga got hit by a pitch and freshman Alex Haag walked, junior J.T. Putt hit a double to right center that plated both Arzaga and Haag. Junior Patrick Farrell then drove in Putt on a single through the left side. Two batters later after sophomore Aaron Salvucci singled to right center driving in Farrell. Senior Michael Khouri scored on a wild pitch to score the fifth run of the inning.

The Rangers took the lead for good the very next inning as they scored three more runs. With one out and senior Mike Benton on second base, Arzaga came to the plate and hit a towering homerun over the left center fence. Putt singled and then Farrell drove in this third run of the game as he doubled to left field to drive in Putt.

Regis tacked on three more in the seventh inning when freshman Dave Holland scored on a throwing error and then Haag's single to right center drove in Arzaga and junior Chris Steinbeck.

Regis was able to score at least one run in seven of the eight innings in which they came to the plate.

Regis pounded out 17 hits against one of the best pitching staffs in the RMAC. Arzaga (3-4), Putt (3-5), Farrell (3-5), Salvucci (3-4) all each had three hits for Regis. Haag went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Haag, Arzaga, and Farrell each drove in three runs.

Junior Eric Anderson collected his second win of the season (2-1) going three innings of no-hit baseball, striking out two. Regis was a robust 9-for-16 (.563) with two outs in the game.

Regis continued their scoring streak from the first game in the second game as they scored at least one run in the first three innings and 10 of the first 11 innings. Their big inning came in the third when they scored a whooping seven runs.

Haag and Putt both singled up the middle to begin off the inning. Farrell hit his first triple of the season down the left field line to drive both Haag and Putt in. Khouri then drove Farrell in as he singled to center field. Salvucci came up and doubled, then Khouri scored on a wild pitch and Salvucci moved up to third.

Benton came to the plate two batters later and doubled to left center driving both Holland and Salvucci. Jesus Hernandez then came in and retired his first three batters to get CSU-Pueblo out of the inning.

Unfortunately the Rangers allowed CSU-Pueblo to score seven of themselves in the top of the fourth inning to retake the lead at 10-9.

The Rangers bats were quieted by Hernandez as they were shutout over the next three innings while the Thunderwolves tacked on three more. CSU-Pueblo then took a 15-9 lead after scoring two in the seventh inning.

Regis put a little bit of scare into the Thunderwolves as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't get any closer falling 15-11 in the nightcap.

Farrell was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate driving in two runs. Salvucci went 2-for-4, while Haag was 2-for-5. Benton also drove in two runs for Regis as the Rangers weren't as successful at the plate striking out a combined nine times.

Sophomore Bryant Asnicar (0-2) was saddled with the loss allowing just one hit and one earned run in 1 2/3 innings.

This game was different in the fact that the Ranger were only 2-for-11 with two outs in the game and only got the leadoff batter on three times.

The Rangers will finish the home portion of their schedule as they host Colorado Mines on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday's game will begin at 3:00 PM at the Regis Baseball Field.
