Ranger Baseball Picked to Finish 2nd in RMAC Preseason Poll; Steinbeck Picked Unanimous Preseason All-RMAC
Colorado Springs, Colo.: The Regis University baseball team was picked to finish second in 2009 as released today by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Regis is selected to win the Plains Division with Nebraska-Kearney and received one first place vote. The Rangers are coming off a 27-22 season, including a 23-16 conference mark. The Rangers earned a bid to the RMAC Tournament where they lost both their games in the double elimination tournament. Regis had one of the best offenses in the country last season as they led NCAA Division II in batting percentage at .374. The voting for the preseason poll is done by the eight head coaches.
Mesa State, the defending regular season RMAC champions, are picked to repeat and received six first place votes. Regis and UNK are selected to tie for second while New Mexico Highlands is selected fourth.
Junior first baseman Chris Steinbeck was a unanimous preseason All-RMAC selection. The Second Team All-RMAC selection last season, Steinbeck led the Rangers in at bats (196), run (63) and hits (77), while hitting .393. Steinbeck, from Littleton, Colo., was second on the team with 22 multi-hit games and finished the season on a 15-game hitting streak. He started 47 games last season, 42 as first base and five in left field.
Regis will host Metro State in a non-conference double header on Feb. 1st. at the Regis Baseball Field. The first 10 games the Rangers have scheduled are all home games.
