Rangers Comeback Win Highlights Day as Rangers Sweep Doubleheader; J.T. Putt Drives in Seven in Game 2
Golden, Colo.: The Regis Ranger baseball team evened their record at 10-10 with a doubleheader sweep of Colorado Mines 12-11 and 17-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Sunday.
Regis (10-10, 3-5 RMAC) was down 9-0 after three innings before the Rangers made their comeback. The Rangers scored two in the fourth and two more in the fifth before exploding for six in the sixth inning. Regis got a two-RBI triple by junior Chris Steinbeck and a two-RBI single by freshman Alex Haag in the sixth as the Rangers sent 10 batters to the plate.
Mines (5-15, 2-6 RMAC) tied the score at 10 in the bottom of the sixth and then took a one-run lead scoring once in the seventh. The Rangers came to the plate in the ninth needing at least one run to continue the game, they got that plus one more. Haag singled to begin the inning and then advanced to second two batters later. Junior Patrick Farrell then pinch hit for Colt Meacham and what a pinch hit it was. Farrell bombed his team-leading seventh homerun to drive in Haag and give the Rangers a 12-11 lead.
Regis then went to the bullpen where senior Kyle Spencer threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his second save of the season. Junior Eric Anderson recorded the win for Regis (1-0) threwing a perfect eighth inning striking out two. Steinbeck, junior Jesus Arzaga, Haag and junior J.T. Putt each tallied two hits for Regis. Haag went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Steinbeck, Putt and senior Michael Khouri each drove in two runs.
The second game wasn't quite so nerve-racking as Regis scored at least one run in six of the seven innings. Regis was up 8-0 before Mines was able to get on the board. Three Rangers limited the Orediggers to just five hits and only one earned run. Senior Brennan Bonati (1-3)threw five innings allowing one run and scattering four hits. Anderson and junior Zach McBeth each pitched an inning both striking out two.
Junior J.T. Putt had himself five stellar plate appearances. He went 4-for-4 with two homeruns and seven RBI, scored three runs and had one walk. Steinbeck collected two hits as did sophomore Aaron Salvucci and senior Mike Benton. Steinbeck, sophomore Zach Blakeley and Salvucci each drove in two. Blakeley was able to drive in two without getting a hit as he hit a sacrifice fly and walked a run in.
The Rangers don't have much rest as they take on non-conference foe Conordia-St. Paul on Tuesday and Wednesday. There is just one nine-inning game each day both beginning at 3 PM.
