Rangers Stumble Twice to Colorado Mines by Identical 11-8 Scores

Denver, Colo.: The Regis Ranger baseball team were unable to come from behind twice today as they stumbled twice to Colorado Mines in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.  Mines won both games by indentical 11-8 scores.

Regis (19-25, 11-19 RMAC) got on the board early scoring one run in the first on junior Patrick Farrell's single driving in junior Chris Steinbeck.

Colorado Mines (9-33, 6-23) then took a big lead plating six runs in the second inning and then took a 7-1 lead after scoring a run in the third. 

Regis was able to pull within two runs after junior J.T. Putt doubled home Steinbeck and junior Jesus Arzaga.  The very next batter, Farrell, slammed a two-run homerun over the left center wall.

Regis got to within 7-6 in the fourth as with two outs, Arzaga hit a triple and sophomore Zach Blakeley drove him in singling up the middle.  That is as close as Regis would get as the Orediggers scored four runs in the final two innings.  Regis put a little bit of a scare into Mines as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh on senior Michael Khouri's double and freshman Dave Holland's sacrifice fly.

Arzaga went a perfect 4-for-4 in game one, while both Putt and Farrel each went 2-for-3 with Farrell driving in three and Putt two.  Khouri also had two hits in four at-bats.

Junior Gerard Mohrmann (1-2) was saddled with the loss going three innings allowing seven earned runs.  Freshman Chris Rogers came in over the next three innings and pitched well allowing just one run.

Regis again took an early lead in the second game, scoring three taking advantage of two hits and an Oredigger error.

With the scored 3-1 in favor of the Rangers after three innings, Mines broke open the game scoring nine times on just three hits and five Ranger errors.  All nine runs were unearned as Mines sent 13 batters to the plate.

Regis couldn't recover from the deep hole, but again put a scare into Mines scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it interesting.

Senior Mike Benton led off the inning with a triple and scored on a passed ball.  With the bases loaded the Rangers were unable to get the ball out of the infield but were able to plate two runs.

Freshman Alex Haag then stepped to the plate with two outs and hit a two-run double to left center to drive in Farrell and Putt.  Holland then grounded out to the shortstop as Mines swept Regis in today's doubleheader.

Farrell went 2-for-2 with two walks, while Arzaga was 2-for-4.  Freshman Mike McElreath fell to 0-2 going 3 1/3 innings striking out two but only allowing one earned run.
