Rangers Use Seven Run Third to Open Game Against Colorado Mines; Cruise to 14-8 Victory
Denver, Colo.: The Regis Ranger baseball team used a seven run third inning to blow open a close game and cruise to a 14-8 victory in the last home series of the season. Sophomore Steve Falconi (3-4) picked up his third win of the season going seven innings.
Regis (19-23, 11-17 RMAC) score three in the first inning after Colorado Mines (7-33, 4-23 RMAC) got on the board first with a single run in the top of the inning. Junior J.T. Putt hit his third triple of the season driving in both junior Jesus Arzaga and sophomore Zach Blakeley, who each singled before Putt. Junior Patrick Farrell then drove in Putt in the next at bat to got up 3-1.
Mines got a run closer scoring another run in the top of the second and then tied the game in the third scoring another single at 3-3. Regis then exploded for seven runs to open the game up in the bottom of the third.
The first three batters hit singles with freshman Dave Holland supplying the first run driving in senior Michael Khouri. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, junior Chris Steinbeck walked in sophomore Aaron Salvucci.
Arzaga, then singled down the right field line to drive in Holland. Blakeley drove in senior Mike Benton on a fielders choice, then Putt came up again with ducks on the pond. He again came through in the clutch hitting a two-run double to right center plating Blakeley and Arzaga. Khouri supplied the last run singling to left field driving in Putt.
Falconi only allowed one run over his next four innings, while freshman Tyler Landwehr and junior Zach McBeth allowed two runs apiece in an inning of work each.
Regis scored three more in the fourth inning and one in the sixth to win 14-8.
Four players led the hit parade, Regis had 19 hits in all, with three each. Steinbeck, Arzaga, Putt, and Khouri each had three hits, while Putt led Regis with four RBI.
Steinbeck and Arzaga each drove in two runs for Regis, while those two plus Blakeley, Putt, Holland and Benton each crossed the plate two times.
Putt now leads the Rangers with 21 multi-hit games, while Arzaga is next with 19. Farrell leads Regis with 13 games of 2-or-more RBI, while Putt is right behind at 12.
Regis and Colorado Mines will play a doubleheader tomorrow at the Regis Baseball Field with first game pitch set for Noon.
