Rangers Finish Season with Losses to Metro State and New Mexico Highlands at the RMAC Tournament
Pueblo, Colo.: Following an opening round upset of 23rd ranked Mesa State on Wednesday the Rangers ran into two buzzsaws in the likes of crosstown rival Metro State and New Mexico Highlands. Metro State outslugged Regis 19-8 on Thursday and then the Rangers had their season come to an end with a 12-3 loss to New Mexico Highlands.
Regis, who finished with a 23-29 record, began the game scoring three runs in the first inning. Leadoff hitter junior Chris Steinbeck led off the game with a single to centerfield. Three batters later, with two outs, junior J.T. Putt drove in Steinbeck from second base with a single to left field. The next batter, junior Patrick Farrell, jacked his team-leading 15th homerun of the season over the left field fence.
Metro State (28-23) would not be outdone as they took a 5-3 lead after one inning, but the Rangers came back with three more in the second inning to take a 6-5 lead.
With two outs, Steinbeck had an infield single to keep the inning alive. Junior Jesus Arzaga also had a infield single that advanced Steinbeck all the way to third base. Senior Curtis Hornaday then singled up the middle to drive in Steinbeck. Farrell came to the plate with the bases loaded after a Putt walk and came through with a two-run single up the middle.
Unfortunatley for Regis, the Roadrunners scored five more in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-6 lead. The Rangers were unable to respond and then the Roadrunners tacked on three more in the third and one more in each of the next two innings to take a 15-8 lead after five innings.
Regis was unable to plate any more runners after the fourth inning and Metro State tacked on four more in the eighth to make the final score 19-8.
The Rangers did not help their cause with four errors in the contest. Freshman Kyle Mack was saddled with the loss (2-1) going 1 1/3 inning allowing two earned runs, while striking out two.
Farrell and Arzaga each went 3-for-5 at the plate with Farrell driving in five more runs. Steinbeck went 3-for-6 and scored two runs for the Rangers who had 16 hits in the contest. Hornaday and Putt each collected two hits with Putt collecting two walks.

The Rangers then went down to the losers bracket where they met New Mexico Highlands (38-18) in which in the first five innings their was only two combined runs. Regis took the lead in the sixth inning scoring three runs. Senior Mike Benton hit his second homerun of the tournament, a solo shot. After a Steinbeck triple, Arzaga drove him in with a double down the right field line. Sophomore Zach Blakeley singled and then Hornaday was able to push Arzaga across on an error by the Cowboys second baseman.
The lead was short-lived as New Mexico Highlands scored four in the bottom havlf and then four more in the seventh and two in the eighth to blow open the game.
Regis outhit the Cowboys 10-9 but again were scarred by three errors. Freshman Mike McElreath dropped to 1-3 going 6 1/3 innings scattering five hits allowing six earned runs. Sophomre Bryant Asnicar allowed just one hit in his one inning of relief action.
Steinbeck had another solid game going 2-for-4, while Blakeley went 3-for-4 as designated hitter. Arzaga and Benton drove in the only two runs for Regis.
Regis finishes the season at 23-29 and lose six seniors to graduation.
