Rangers Upset Nationally Ranked #23 Mesa State 16-10 in First Round of RMAC Tournament

Pueblo, Colo.: The Regis Ranger baseball team had a tough time this season against Mesa State falling all seven times to the Mavericks in the regular season.  The Rangers saved the best for tournament time defeating the 23rd ranked Mavericks 16-10 in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament.

Regis (23-27) jumped out early plating four runs in the first inning, two of which came off a double by junior Gerard Mohrmann.  Two batters later junior Patrick Farrell slammed his team-leading 14th homerun to drive in Mohrmann.

Mesa State (39-12) responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game.  Regis again put four on the board in the second inning.  The first two runs were unearned on an error by the first baseman.  Junior J.T. Putt and senior Michael Khouri each had singles that drove in junior Chris Steinbeck and Putt respectively.

Junior Steve Falconi then shut down the Mavericks in the second inning and then the Rangers scored four more runs in the third inning to take a 12-4 lead.  Mesa State scored one in the third to cut the lead to 12-5.  In the fifth inning, the Mavericks scored two to make the score 12-7 and the Rangers got one back in the sixth.

The Rangers put the nail in the coffin in the seventh inning scoring three runs to go ahead 16-7.  Putt and Farrell reached and then moved over to second and third respectively on a sacrifice bunt by Khouri.  Head Coach Dan McDermott then inserted senior Curtis Hornaday as a pinch hitter and he came through in grand fashion.  Hornaday took Jake Perkins over the left field fence for a three-run homerun, only his second of the season.

Sophomore Reuben Gallegos, who picked up his third victory (3-0), allowed just one run in 2 2/3 innings and junior Anthony Musielak pitched the final two innings scattering three hits and allowing just two runs and striking out four batters.

Second Team All-RMAC shortstop Jesus Arzaga led the Rangers with three hits in four at bats while driving in two.  Hornaday went a perfect 2-for-2 with his three RBI, while Putt went 3-for-5, driving in two runs.  Farrell, Khouri, and RMAC Freshman of the Year Dave Holland each collected two hits apiece.
