Rangers Fall to Fifth Ranked Mesa State 25-10 and 10-2
Grand Junction, Colo.: The 31st ranked Regis Ranger baseball team ran into a buzzsaw today as they fell in a doubleheader to 5th ranked Mesa State 25-10 and 10-2 in a non-conference series.
The two teams combined for nine runs in the first inning alone with Regis (7-4) scoring four and Mesa State (7-2) scoring five. Regis cooled off at the plate but the Mavericks didn't as they scored at least two runs in every inning but two.
Regis collected 15 hits led by junior shortstop Jesus Arzaga's three hits. Chris Steinbeck, J.T. Putt, Patrick Farrell, and Gerard Mohrmann each collected two hits for the Rangers. Farrell drove in five runs on two homeruns, now leads the Rangers with 19 RBI and six homeruns.
Junior Darren Chavez was saddled with his first loss allowing seven earned runs in just two innings of work.
Regis could only muster two runs on six hits in the second game as two Maverick pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts. Mesa State again scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Steinbeck, Michael Khouri, Putt, Salvucci, Colt Meacham and Dan Butler each had one hit for the Rangers. Steinbeck and Khouri had one RBI each. Brennan Bonati allowed seven earned runs in three innings striking out three Mavericks.
The two teams will play one final game tomorrow at Noon.
