Rangers Fall Twice in as Many Games to Mesa State for Third Straight Loss to the Mavericks
Denver, Colo.: After falling 12-1 to the Mavericks on Friday, the Rangers lost two more to Mesa State, 6-2 and 10-2, on Saturday. Regis registered four runs on the day on a total of 14 hits in 56 at bats.
In game one, Regis scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a solo homerun by junior Jesus Arzaga. Following Arzaga's homer, sophomore Zach Blakeley singled to the shortstop but was unable to cross the plate during the remainder of the inning.
The second inning went scoreless before Mesa State tied the score at one in the top of the third. The Mavericks added one more run onto the board in the top of the fifth before the Rangers tied the score in the bottom of the sixth. Going into the seventh with the score 2-2, Mesa State rallied for four runs. Unable to answer back, Regis recorded the loss 6-2.
Chris Carma, now 4-2, recorded the win for Mesa State. Recording the loss for the Rangers was Mike McElreath who is now 0-1.
To start the second game, Mesa State jumped on top scoring two runs in the top of the first. They added two more in the top of the second followed by three in the top of the fourth. Coming into the bottom of the fourth down 7-0, Regis scored two runs to come within five of the Mavericks.
Senior Curtis Hornaday walked to start off the bottom of the fourth. After a fly out by senior Micheal Khouri, a double by freshman Dave Holland advanced Hornaday to third. A single by senior Mike Benton down the right field line scored both Holland and Hornaday before two Ranger outs took the game into the top of the fifth.
Neither team scored in the fifth inning before Mesa tacked three more runs onto the board in the top of the sixth. With a scoreless seventh inning, the Mavericks snagged the win 10-2. Brent Lamaster recorded the win for Mesa and is now 3-0 on the season. Recording the loss for Regis was Steve Falconi who drops to 1-2.
Both Blakeley and junior J.T. Putt went 3-for-6 on the day. Sophomore Aaron Salvucci and Holland each went 2-for-6.
Regis will finish their series with Mesa State on Sunday at the Regis Baseball Field. The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
