Rangers Muster Only One Run in 14-1 Defeat at the Hands of New Mexico Highlands
Las Vegas, N.M.: The Regis Ranger baseball team mustered only seven hits and one run in a 14-1 loss to New Mexico Highlands in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action today.
Regis (16-19, 9-13 RMAC) got on the board first in the third inning when junior Chris Steinbeck drove in senior Mike Benton after he got on base via an error and moved over to second on a balk. New Mexico Highlands (26-13, 16-7 RMAC), who won their eighth in a row, tied the game in the bottom of the fourth and didn't look back.
They scored three in the fifth, two in the sixth, five in the seventh, and three in the eighth to take the game 14-1. Cowboy pitcher Drew Vassil (7-2) pitched a complete game gem. He scattered seven hits, allowing no earned runs, while striking out five.
Freshman Steve Falconi (2-3) went 5 2/3 innings allowing just three earned runs. Junior J.T. Putt went 3-for-4, while sophomore Zach Blakeley went 2-for-4 at the plate.
The two teams will play tomorrow and again on Saturday.
